Theme

This page will guide you through the installation of the MIT ECS “theme”, which will make your site look graphically like ECS Demo (and similar to this instruction site, which was also created using the ECS platform). Once you get the graphical look of ECS, proceed to the Plugins page.

Installing the MIT ECS theme

Follow these steps to download the MIT ECS Theme from here and install it on your new site. (Click on the maroon “STEP” headings to reveal and hide additional information, as needed.)

STEP 1 – Download the MIT ECS Theme from here

In the sidebar to the right of this page, under Related File Groups, there is a link to the MIT ETC Theme Files. Follow the link to find these files. The MIT ECS Theme is stored in an archive file:

mitecs.zip

Download mitecs.zip and save it; you will need it to install the theme on your site. The rest of the files in this file group are illustrations that provide additional information about customizing the appearance of your site. You can download them or view them online when you need them.

STEP 2 – Upload the MIT ECS Theme to your WordPress site

Image 1 in the MIT ECS Theme Files illustrates how to upload the theme to your site; namely:

(i) Open your site’s Dashboard. (You can do that by selecting “Dashboard” from the drop-down menu under your name in the grey admin bar on top of your site.)
(ii) Click on “Appearance” to see options for editing your site’s layout and select “Themes”.
(iii) In the “Themes” interface, click on the “Install Themes” tab to open it.
(iv) Click on “Upload” to bring the interface for importing from a zip archive.
(v) Find and import the file mitecs.zip (which you saved in STEP 1) from your computer.

The MIT ECS Theme is now installed on your website! (Click on “Themes” again to see it listed.)

STEP 3 – Activate the MIT ECS Theme on your WordPress site

Image 2 in the MIT ECS Theme Files illustrates how to install the theme to your site; namely:

(i) In your site’s Dashboard, click on “Appearance” to see the options and select “Themes”.
(ii) In the “Themes” interface, click on the “Manage Themes” tab to open it.
(ii) Find the MIT ECS Theme (MITECS 1.0) in the list of available themes and click “Activate”.

The MIT ECS Theme is now active on your our website! Image 3 in the MIT ECS Theme Files illustrates how your site will look after you activate the MIT ECS Theme. (Note: if it seems like a header image is missing on your site, follow the instructions below to choose one.)

Customizing the look of your ECS site

Once you have installed and activated the MIT ECS Theme, you can now customize its look to make your site unique. Here are two easy ways of customizing your site.

STEP 4 – Edit the general settings of your site

Image 4 in the MIT ECS Theme Files shows how to change your site’s general settings.

(i) In your site’s Dashboard, click on “Settings” to see the options and select “General”.
(ii) In the “General Settings” interface, e.g., type a new tagline (or description) for your site.
(ii) Make other changes, e.g., modify the title of your site or the time zone you are in.
(iv) Click the blue “Save Changes” button at the bottom to save the changes you just made.

STEP 5 – Change the header image of your site

Image 5 in the MIT ECS Theme Files shows how to change your site’s header image.

(i) In your site’s Dashboard, click on “Appearance” to see the options and select “Header”.
(ii) In the “Custom Header” interface, upload your own image or choose from the built-in images in the MIT ECS Theme; these MIT-related images were taken by alumni and students.
(iii) Click on the blue “Save Changes” button at the bottom to save the new header image.

Image 6 in the MIT ECS Theme Files illustrates how your site will look after you have changed the general settings and selected the photo of the MIT Great Dome to be the header image.

After installing the Theme, the next stop on the MIT ECS express is Plugins. Let’s go!
